exmouth house: clerkenwell, london
While at Orms Designers + Architects, I worked as project architect on the design and production information packages for the refurbishment of a 1930s warehouse in Clerkenwell. The building was formerly home to the fabrication of loudspeakers and corsets and now houses a number of architecture, engineering and media businesses. The upgrade works cimprised refurbishment of the common parts and internal circulation atrium and a roof extension to house multiple small offices with shared facilities.
As a hub for creative business, Exmouth house's interior needed to reflect its occupants' practices. An existing atrium is internalised with an ETFE roof, mesh panels help disguise the branching services on the perimeter walls and neon signage gives a nod to the building's heritage. "We enjoyed having Rebecca Pike at Orms. She is thoroughly professional and organised - thinking through what needs to be done, leading the team, getting the best out of them and encouraging collaboration. Rebecca is determined in a charming way. She is a good listener and develops a clear vision of what she wants to achieve. I am sure that she will continue to look after her clients brilliantly and create buildings which work well and will lift the spirit.'
